Galway - Music, medieval streets, charming hustle & bustle

Plan two days to wander, eat, and listen in this musical town and at least one day for a road trip from Galway to some of Irelands's most beautiful sites.

Wandering Galway

Explore the Latin Quarter - wander down the cobblestone streets and imagine the history that has taken place in this historic city. Walk from the waterfr

Pop into a pub (or two!) - a couple of great options include Freeneys and Murphy’s Bar. Grab a pint of Galway Hooker, a pale ale from a brewery just outside of Galway city. The original brew is the first Irish Pale Ale and their selections have expanded to include an IPA, a chocolate stout, a honey ale, and even a hazy IPA.

Take in some local music! Whether you stop to listen to one of the many buskers on the street or a trad session in a pub, follow the sounds of a fiddle or guitar and try not to grin as you get taken in by the music.

Eat

There are plenty of great options in Galway for food and drinks.

One of the best we had is McDonaghs fish and chips

We also loved our breakfast at Mr. Waffle before heading on our day trip to County Mayo.

Sleep

We stayed in this very charming AirBnb outside of Galway city. Our host prepared breakfast in the morning and was sweet as could be. She also offered suggestions for eating and drinking and helped us coordinate a ride into town

When our friends arrived and our group was bigger, we stayed in this cozy Air Bnb, which was closer to the city. It was a comfortable space for six adults, and having off-street parking was great for our group with 2 rental cars. It’s walkable to the city center, however, in the evenings we also found a taxi ride was an affordable option too!

Day Trippin'

Galways location makes it a great launching point for a day trip to some of Ireland’s most scenic and impressive sites.

  • Cliffs of Moher

  • The Burren

  • Croagh Patrick & Westport - County Mayo

  • The Arran Islands

Getting there

Located almost directly west of Dublin on the opposite coast, Galway is approximately a 2-3 hour drive from the capital city. There is a main highway for most of the route, making the drive fairly straightforward.

The Shannon International Airport is just over an hour south of Galway. Shannon is an option if you are planning on exploring mostly the west coast or find cheaper flights in and out of this smaller airport.

We drove from Donegal in Northern Ireland down to Galway, which is a 3+ hour trek. If you are driving two hours or more, we recommend waking up early and getting your driving out of the way so you can explore and make the most of the afternoon and evening once you arrive in Galway!

From Galway, where to next?

Shorter drives

  • Doolin - head south to this little town known for great live music

  • Limerick - south east lies Limerick on the Shannon River. This could make for a good stop to break up the drive to towns further south (Dingle, Kenmare, Killarney, Kinsale, Cork, etc.)

Further drives

  • Dingle (one of our favorite places in Ireland)

  • Kenmare

  • Killarney

  • Tipperary

  • Cork

tldr: Galway

  • Wander and let yourself get lost in this medieval city

  • Follow your nose for fish and chips and your ears to catch a great live music session

  • Plan a day trip from Galway to some off Ireland’s most stunning sites on the west coast
